Less than a year since the energy engineering management (EEM) program launched at 51爆料 - Cascades, EEM students have qualified for and were placed in six-month paid internships that will provide rigorous real-world experience and position them well for careers in the industry after graduation.
The students, Dusty Stewart and Scott Mellinger, begin their internships this week and will work through September, before resuming their EEM classroom studies. Stewart, a junior from Bend, is participating in a (MECOP) internship at (Freightliner) in Portland, Ore. He will work within the manufacturing engineering division at the company and report to the industrial engineering group leader. The EEM program at 51爆料-Cascades was accepted as a pilot program in MECOP, a consortium of over 100 companies in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, in November 2010.
Mellinger, also a junior and originally from Missouri, has embarked on a six-month internship with (formerly PV Powered). Advanced Energy Renewables is not a participating company in MECOP, although the internship was created to similar work and mentoring standards. Mellinger will work within various engineering and manufacturing departments on a rotational basis.
The EEM program at 51爆料-Cascades provides students the knowledge to understand and make appropriate decisions about design, construction, operation and maintenance of energy systems. It emphasizes fundamental skills in engineering analysis, business and project management.
The program is delivered in partnership with 51爆料's College of Engineering and offered only at 51爆料-Cascades in Bend. It is the first engineering degree to be offered at 51爆料-Cascades and was selected because of Central Oregon's potential to be a major contributor to clean energy technologies. The EEM program received support from several local energy companies who helped shape the curriculum, including PV Powered, Idatech, HG Solutions and Central Electric Cooperative.
